Patrick Rogers, CEO of Music Canada, shares remarks on artificial intelligence, the Online Streaming Act and other once-in-a-generation regulatory shifts facing Canada’s music industry. He shares his thoughts on how leaders from across the music sector can work together to protect human creativity and foster growth in our sector.

Patrick Rogers is the CEO of Music Canada. He first joined Music Canada in 2016 with the goal of innovating Music Canada’s advocacy strategy. In that time, Music Canada led the charge in reforming the Copyright Board of Canada, advocated for an improved Ontario Music Investment Fund and rallied cultural industry stakeholders during the parliamentary review of the Copyright Act

Artificial Intelligence and Safeguarding Human Artistry

Join Music Canada, AI experts and music industry leaders to discuss recent advancements in AI, the value that AI presents as a tool to unlock creativity in the industry, and also the risks that AI poses if the creators behind our favourite music can no longer control how their art is used. Panelists will dig into the potential of the technology and how music and the broader creative industries are coming together to protect human artistry.

Miranda Mulholland, Artist and Creative Culture Advisor, Music Canada
Miranda is a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, independent label owner, artist advocate, and Founder and Artistic Director of the Muskoka Music Festival. Currently, in addition to her solo work, she is a member of musical groups Harrow Fair and Belle Starr, and her touring and recording credits include Great Lake Swimmers, Bowfire, The Jim Cuddy Band and many more. She has performed on over 70 albums as well as TV shows and film scores. Not limited to band performances, Miranda has appeared in various theatre productions, including the Dora winning productions of ‘Parfumerie’ and ‘Spoon River’ with Soulpepper Theatre in Toronto. Miranda’s latest album “By Appointment or Chance” has also been nominated for a JUNO award.

Miranda is Music Canada’s Creative Culture Advisor, and the Chair of the Music Canada Advisory Council and sits on the Board of Governors, Massey/Roy Thomson Halls.

Dr. Jeff Lupker, CEO, Co-Founder, Staccato
Dr. Jeffrey Lupker is the CEO of Staccato, which is a platform of generative AI tools for musicians and lyricists which helps them to remain in an uninterrupted state of creative flow as they create. By allowing users to input a few keywords, lyrics or bars of music, Staccato can suggest ideas on what might come next to help overcome writer’s block and inspire new creative directions. Dr. Lupker holds a PhD from The University of Western Ontario’s Don Wright Faculty of Music where he is also on contract faculty in the Music Research and Composition department. Beyond Staccato and his research, Dr. Lupker is an active performer on primarily guitar and keyboards and has played across Canada and USA with singers such as Juno Winner and Canada/America’s Got Talent finalist Stacey Kay and Canada’s Drag Race Winner Priyanka.

Erin Reilly, Founding Director, Texas Immersive Institute, Moody College of Communication
Erin Reilly is a creator, educator, and strategist with 20 years of experience inventing new approaches, products, services, and experiences about storytelling, engagement, and learning through immersive technology. As an educator, Erin currently is Professor of Practice in the Stan Richards School of advertising and Public Relations, as well as founding Director of Texas Immersive Institute, the interactive and immersive media hub at the University of Texas at Austin focused on research, projects, and learning the future of media. Erin has been a guest lecturer worldwide at universities and industry conferences. She is an Executive Committee Board Member of the Infinity Festival, member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Interactive Media Peer Group, Past Board President of NAMLE (National Association for Media Literacy Education) and serves on advisory boards, such as SXSW Pitch and PBS children’s programming, Hero Elementary and Emmy-award winning Sci Girls.

Kiki Jaspal, Chief Revenue Officer Renaissance
After graduating in Finance & Investment Banking, Kiki started in the music industry as an intern in the Universal Music UK commercial team, before moving in-house to Island Records. In 2016, Kiki moved to Canada working for Nettwerk Music Group before returning back to Universal Music, as a Streaming Marketing Manager, based in Toronto. Leading campaigns featuring NBA Champion Serge Ibaka and 2 x IndyCar champion driver Josef Newgarden. In 2020 Kiki became the Chief Revenue Officer of Vancouver-based music fan engagement startup, Renaissance, in addition to founding Daydream Records, which is distributed by Universal Music
