Canada Council grants are now organized into six programs: Explore & Create, Engage & Sustain, Creating, Knowing & Sharing, Supporting Artistic Practice, Arts Across Canada and Arts Abroad. The following breakdown shows the music specific grants
Explore & Create
‘Explore & Create’ funds Canadian artists, artistic groups and organizations committed to the creation and dissemination of innovative, vibrant and diverse art. This program advances Canadian artistic practices by encouraging artists to investigate creative processes and take risks that lead to the development of unique works destined to connect with the public. Explore and Create supports the research, development, creation and production of work, as well as professional development for artists.
1 – Professional Development for Artists
The Professional Development for Artists component of Explore and Create supports the career growth of Canadian artists and artistic groups by encouraging participation in a wide range of development opportunities. Grants fund activities that contribute to the professional advancement of Canadian artists working in all artistic disciplines. It covers things such as mentorships, internships, apprenticeships, specialized training, workshops etc.
The Research and Creation component of Explore and Create supports the initial stages of the creative process. Canadian artists, artistic groups and arts organizations can apply to develop and make creative works. Grants provide support for creative research, creation and project development.
The Concept to Realization component of Explore and Create supports the full creative cycle – from the initial idea through to presentation, at any stage of the creative continuum. Canadian artists, artistic groups and arts organizations can apply to create projects intended for presentation. Grants provide support for artistic research, creation, project development, remount, production, post-production and presentation. This component awards:
- Project grants for single activities
- Composite grants that encompass several activities during the same time period
4 – Artist Driven Organizations – DEADLINE – January 17, 2024 (translation deadline February 7, 2024)
The Artist-Driven Organizations component of Explore and Create supports the development of artistic activities, from research, creation, and production through to dissemination, by Canadian arts organizations that are driven by the vision of artistic leaders. Grants fund the activities of organizations mandated to support the creative process of artists, stimulating the emergence of new artistic voices and offering a range of artistic experiences to the public. Most core grant applications must be translated into French or English.
Creating, Knowing and Sharing: The Arts and Cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples
1 – Travel – DEADLINE – Any time before your departure date
The Travel component of Creating, Knowing and Sharing funds First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists, arts/cultural professionals (including artists’ representatives), cultural carriers, artistic groups, collectives and organizations working in all disciplines. Grants support travel costs to attend significant events within Canada or abroad that advance your professional development, enable you or the artists you represent to access new markets or build national and international presence.
2 – Small Scale Activities – DEADLINE – Any time before the start date of your project
The Small-Scale Activities component of Creating, Knowing and Sharing funds activities that will advance your artistic career or practice. This may include acquiring materials for artistic production, engaging in career or artistic development activities or benefitting from specific expertise, advice or training from a professional artist or cultural carrier.
3 – Short Term Projects – DEADLINES – September 20, 2023; December 13, 2023; March 20, 2024
The Short-Term Projects component of Creating, Knowing and Sharing funds First Nations, Inuit and Métis professional and aspiring artists, cultural carriers, arts/cultural professionals, groups, collectives and organizations working in all disciplines. You can apply for any combination of eligible Creating, Knowing and Sharing activities lasting up to 1 year
- Creating – research; creation; production; critical discourse (including research or writing); residencies; collaborations
- Knowing – mentorships; artistic training; community-based initiatives to engage young people through artistic practices; language preservation through artistic practices; intergenerational transmission of artistic knowledge; preservation of traditional knowledge through artistic practice; development of administrative, artistic, cultural or organizational capacity; research; collaborations

4 – Long Term Projects – June 14, 2023 (new deadlines TBA)
The Long-Term Projects component of Creating, Knowing and Sharing funds First Nations, Inuit and Métis professional artists, arts/cultural professionals, groups, collectives and organizations working in all disciplines. Grants provide support for any combination of eligible Creating, Knowing and Sharing activities for projects lasting between 1 and 3 years.

5 – Indigenous Organizations – September 27, 2023 (October 18, 2023 translation deadline)
The Indigenous Organizations component of Creating, Knowing and Sharing funds First Nations, Inuit and Métis organizations that engage in contemporary, customary or traditional artistic and cultural activities. These activities can include non-Indigenous artists and collaborations with non-Indigenous organizations. Grants support the exploration of innovative strategies for Indigenous creative and cultural expression, and related administrative activities.
First-time applicants must speak with a Creating, Knowing and Sharing program officer before applying to this component.
Individuals who are Deaf or who have disabilities, including those living with mental illness, and require accommodation at any stage of the application process may be eligible for additional assistance.
Arts Across Canada
Arts Across Canada fosters meaningful relationships and exchanges between artists and the Canadian public. Artists, arts professionals, groups and arts organizations can apply to present and share artistic work with diverse communities across the country, engage more deeply with the public and develop a stronger national profile. Festivals and other presenters can apply to highlight the work of Canadian and international artists, and contribute to the growing dialogue and exchange on the arts in Canada.
1 – Travel – DEADLINE – Any time before your departure date.
The Travel component of Arts Across Canada funds activities linked to Canadian presentation, exhibition, artistic collaboration, networking and building market opportunities for Canadian artists, arts professionals, artistic groups and arts organizations. Grants provide support to participate in significant events, build a national presence and for festivals and presenters to conduct research for Canadian artistic programming. Travel must be within Canada, at least 300 kilometres from your place of departure, and by invitation. You can apply for single or several destinations within 1 trip.
2 – Representation and Promotion DEADLINE – Any time before departure date
The Representation and Promotion component of Arts Across Canada funds travel linked to promotion and the development of new markets for Canadian artists and artistic works. Grants are available to Canadian registered or incorporated arts organizations that represent Canadian artists and regularly seek out new opportunities in the Canadian arts market.
3 – Circulation and Touring DEADLINE December 6, 2023
The Circulation and Touring component of Arts Across Canada funds touring and exhibition activities of Canadian artists, artistic groups and arts organizations. Grants support the presentation and exhibition of performances and works by Canadian artists which build national exposure and reach Canadian audiences.
4 – Foreign Artist Tours DEADLINE December 6, 2023
The Foreign Artist Tours component of Arts Across Canada supports Canadian not-for-profit arts organizations to circulate exhibitions or tour artists from around the world and provide new experiences to the Canadian public.
5 – Arts Festivals and Presenters DEADLINE January 17, 2024 (translation deadline February 7, 2024)
Grants support festivals and presenters to showcase important artistic work, strengthen artistic practice, and build bridges between artists and audiences. You can apply for a contribution towards activities that: bring artistic programming to Canadian audiences through presentation or exhibition of Canadian work (as well as international work, if applicable) within a biennale, festival or a series of at least 3 events
support artists and strengthen artistic practice build relationships between artists and the Canadian public.
Arts Abroad
Arts Abroad celebrates the creativity, innovation and excellence of Canadian artists by helping to bring Canadian works to the world. This program supports artists, arts professionals, groups and organizations to enhance international exposure, undertake artistic exploration or exchanges with international colleagues, and nurture new and existing art markets in a global context.
1 – Travel – DEADLINE – Any time before your departure date
The Travel component of Arts Abroad funds travel linked to international presentation, exhibition, artistic collaboration, networking and new market opportunities for Canadian artists and arts professionals, artistic groups and arts organizations. Grants provide support to attend significant events outside of Canada and build international presence.
2 – Representation and Promotion – DEADLINE Anytime before your departure date
The Representation and Promotion component of Arts Across Canada funds travel linked to promotion and the development of new markets for Canadian artists and artistic works. Grants are available to Canadian registered or incorporated arts organizations that represent Canadian artists and regularly seek out new opportunities in the Canadian arts market.
3 – Circulation and Touring – DEADLINE – December 6, 2023
The Circulation and Touring component of Arts Abroad funds activities linked to artistic exchange and networking for Canadian artists, artistic groups and arts organizations. Grants help build international exposure and increase the visibility of Canadian artists and their works abroad.
4 – Residencies – Any time before the start date of your project; cut-off date December 6, 2023
The Residencies component of Arts Abroad funds activities linked to international artistic and cultural exchanges for Canadian artists, arts professionals, artistic groups and arts organizations. Grants support artistic growth, creative reflection and professional development within the context of an international residency. You must be invited or selected by an international organization to participate in a residency of at least 1 week to a maximum of 6 months. You can apply to:
- advance artistic practice
- create work
- develop artistic networks
- promote cultural exchange
If your application is for self-directed residencies, you must instead apply to the Explore and Create: Research and Creation component.

FACTOR (The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings)
FACTOR Jury Accreditation Process: All FACTOR jurors have to be accredited before participating on a jury. There is a simple form to be completed and you must also provide a brief bio relating to your jury experience. We ask all those interested in being a FACTOR juror in the future to complete the accreditation process now. It’s online at www.factor.ca/Juries.aspx. You just need to set up a profile on their website, or use the one that you have if you’ve recently applied to FACTOR programs. Once accredited, you’re good for three years.
Artist Development Program: DEADLINE September 14, 2023 (new deadline TBA)
The Artist Development program (AD) offers a $5,000 subsidy toward a year of artist development activities including sound recording, touring, showcasing, video content production, and marketing.
This program is intended to provide support towards the professionalization and integration of early career artists into the music industry. Artists with an established track record and ongoing market momentum should review the Juried Sound Recording: Album or Juried Sound Recording: Single/EP programs.
The Collective Initiatives program is comprised of three components that, singly or in combination, help finance music industry events, showcases and productions that have a collective benefit for the Canadian music industry.
Every event or initiative funded under this program must be collective in nature. Projects cannot predominantly benefit any one artist or enterprise. Successful projects will create new market development results for Canadian artists or music entrepreneurs.
Juried Sound Recording Program: Deadlines May 25, 2023, September 7, 2023 (2024 deadlines TBA). Assists Canadian labels and artists by helping to finance the production costs of full-length sound recordings or music DVDs for commercial release. The JSR Program is split into two streams of funding: 1. FACTOR Loan: for projects that have a distribution agreement in place with a FACTOR-Recognized Distributor at the time of application. Please go to www.factor.ca for a list of FACTOR Recognized Distributors. 2. Independent Loan: for projects that don’t have such distribution at the time of application. FACTOR Loan may provide up to 75% of the Total Eligible Budget to a maximum of $25,000, not to exceed $2,500 per track. Independent Loan: up to 75% of the Total Eligible Budget to a maximum of $15,000, not to exceed $1,500 per track.
Juried Sound Recording: Single/EP DEADLINE May 25, 2023 (new deadlines TBA)
The Juried Sound Recording: Single/EP program provides up to $25,000 of investment towards 75% of eligible expenses related to artists creating new recordings for a single and/or EP format, within a fiscal year. Specifically, five songs or less and under 20 minutes of recorded music.
This is a pilot program, designed to augment FACTOR’s current Artist programs as a stepping stone from Artist Development to Juried Sound Recording: Album, as well as addressing that in today’s market, release planning and strategy has evolved. The eligible expenses related to sound recording, marketing, video, radio marketing, and live performance support are flexible with no caps to each component. The desired outcome is a budget that suits the specific project success, as FACTOR understands this may vary depending on artist and genre.
Songwriter Development. Rolling Deadline. The Songwriter Development program offers a $2,000 subsidy toward a year of songwriting initiatives, such as domestic and international travel for co-writing sessions and trips, songwriting camps and workshops, and eligible showcases.
Video Program: Rolling Deadlines. Helps finance original music videos that support qualifying sound recordings by Canadian Artists. Those sound recordings must meet FACTOR’s distribution criteria. An intermediate Level Video Grant (Artists rated 2 or 3) can be used to help pay for lower-budget music videos and may provide a grant of up to 75% of the Total Eligible Budget to a project max of $5000. An Advance Level Video Grant (Artists rated 3) may provide a grant of up to 75% of the Total Eligible Budget to a project max of $20,000.
Live Performance Program: Rolling Deadlines. Provides funding that subsidizes the touring and showcasing costs of Canadian Artists, both in Canada and abroad. The program is comprised of a Tour Support Component and a Showcase Component. For both Components, the amount of the subsidy is calculated for each tour date or showcase date based on the number of artist members, hired musicians and crew, and on the location and size of the venue; the subsidy cannot exceed 75% of the final eligible budget. All eligible Canadian Artists can apply for Showcase, but only Artists rated 2 or 3 can apply for Tour.
Support for Eligible Music Companies. DEADLINE October 26, 2023.
The Support for Eligible Music Companies program provides funding for business development initiatives that support the marketing and promotion of the company and its services, domestic and international travel to support the company’s development objectives through three components: Business Travel, Business Development, and Songwriter Support for Music Publishers.

MUSICACTION: various deadlines (Francophone only)
Musicaction programs are designed to meet the needs of independent music production, within which the majority of albums by French-speaking artists across the country are produced. Generally, nearly 80% of its resources are devoted to French-speaking vocal music and 20% to other musical genres. English-speaking music projects are directed to FACTOR.

An initiative of CAB in partnership with CIMA and CRIA. Supports a variety of marketing and promotional initiatives related to eligible Canadian recordings, including radio advertising. It is strongly suggested you begin far in advance of the deadline; contact the Manager of Programs and Applications for assistance.
Domestic Marketing: In order to be eligible for funding, an artist must have begun production on the record for which they are applying prior to submitting their application. All domestic funding initiatives must be related to spending in Canada only other than internet advertising which can originate anywhere.
Domestic Touring: Allows qualifying artists to apply for domestic tour funding, showcasing and promotional appearances independently of their Canadian label and without having to make a significant investment.
International Marketing: Applicants can choose from the following funding categories: Digital Marketing, Independent Publicist’s Fees, Independent Radio Promoter’s Fees, Postering, Print Advertising, Radio Advertising, Retail Promotions and Other.
International Touring: Allows qualifying artists to apply for international tour funding, showcasing and promotional appearances independently of their Canadian label and without having to make a significant investment.

SOCAN Foundation provides grants for Canadian music creators and publishers working to promote appreciation for Canadian music in today’s society. Our grants support the spread of our music both within Canada and abroad, ensuring our voices are heard all over the world and in our own back yards.
Grants for Creators, Music Publishers and Individuals: Rolling Deadlines.
Grants are provided to SOCAN composers, writers, and music publishers across all genres of music to assist with travel-related costs for career-building or career-defining activities in Canada or abroad.
Priority for approval will be given to applications demonstrating the importance of the activity to the applicant’s career. Activities that receive compensation are not eligible.
Activities that are self-directed are not eligible.
Activities that are eligible could include, but are not limited to:
- award presentations;
- important performances;
- residencies;
- showcases;
- workshops.
Professional Development Assistance Program. Ongoing Deadline.
Grants are provided to SOCAN composers, writers and music publishers across all genres of music, for upgrading their skills and knowledge or acquiring new skills and knowledge to advance their careers.

The Canadian Music Assistance Program will continue to receive applications that provide details that address the reality of delivering their application’s activity under the COVID-19 crisis.

Grants are provided to assist individuals, corporations, performers, ensembles, and presenters to commission SOCAN members to create new works in all genres of music.
The intent of this program is to reach beyond local, regional, provincial, and federal arts council funding bodies and encourage other members of our community (individuals, organizations or companies) to commission new musical works.

ALBERTA
ALBERTA FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS (AFA)
A crown agency of the Government of Alberta, the AFA distributes $16.1 million each year from lottery revenues to individual and organizations in the visual, performing and literary arts. The AFA also administers the Alberta Film Development Program’s annual budget of $5 million.
Arts Presenting Project Funding. Deadline: December 1, 2023.
This funding supports the public presentation of professional artists by reimbursing a portion of professional artists’ fees for the preceding year.
Community Performing Arts Organizations Operating Funding. Deadline: October 2, 2023.
This grant provides annual funding to eligible not-for-profit community organizations that self-create and self-produce performing art productions.
Music Individual Project Funding. DEADLINE March 1, 2024; September 3, 2024.
This funding provides up to $15,000 to support the development of individual Alberta artists, arts administrators, or an ensemble of artists by providing funding for a specific music project.
Professional Performing Arts Organizations Operating Funding. Deadline: November 3, 2025.
This grant provides funding in three-year cycles to eligible professional organizations that self-create and self-produce performing art productions.

MANITOBA FILM AND MUSIC
Manitoba Film and Music offers a series of music funding programs to help expand the already impressive Manitoba music scene. As a Government funding agency, we encourage music recording artists and songwriters in the Province of Manitoba to develop and promote their skills with assistance through the following funding programs.

This program is designed to support the production of culturally relevant and commercially viable music recording products by the Manitoba music recording industry. Applicants may apply under one of three different program levels.
- Level 1 – to help you record a demo to be used for calling card purposes or as pre-production for an upcoming full length release, or to record songs intended for commercial release.
- Level 2 – to help you record five or more songs to be released for sale through all mediums (including online distribution).
- Level 3 – to help you record six or more songs to be released for sale through all mediums (including online distribution).
Objectives
- To encourage culturally relevant and commercially viable production activity in the Manitoba music recording industry by providing financial support for costs associated with music recordings.
- To encourage development of the Manitoba music recording industry’s infrastructure by increasing production levels, marketability and improving skill levels.

This program is designed to encourage non-Manitoban artists to travel to Manitoba and utilize Manitoban recording studios, producers, and recording professionals. This program is also intended to increase business and experience for Manitoban music recording industry professionals.
This program is designed to assist Manitoba recording artists to market and promote a completed music recording project. This can include hiring a publicist, marketing teams, creation of a website, advertising, as well as content and music video creation.
This program is intended to provide Manitoban artists/groups with tour support funding to develop audiences outside of their hometown. This includes performances and tours across Canada, through the United States, or internationally.

Travel Grants:
Business Envelope Travel Grant – Deadline November 3, 2023
Music BC’s Business Envelope Travel Grant provides assistance to B.C.-based, for-profit music companies and entrepreneurs undertaking travel activities in support of the growth and development of their business and/or their B.C.-based artist clients.
This is a pilot program designed for returning grant recipients from for-profit music companies to increase funding flexibility over a 12-month period for eligible activities and expenses.
Domestic and International Travel Grants
Music BC Artist and Business Travel Grant applications are closed for both domestic and international destinations – including showcase, touring and business travel.

Music Industry Development (MID) Program
The Music Industry Development Program (MID) is designed to foster the development and growth of the music industry in New Brunswick through investment in projects submitted by New Brunswick music industry artists and businesses. Music·Musique NB oversees the investment program on behalf of the New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture.

Equinox program for Indigenous Artists. Deadline March 15, 2024.
The Equinox program supports Indigenous artists, curators and groups to engage in artistic creation and professional development. Eligible projects can range from
- research and development for the creation of new works
- creation and presentation of artistic work
- activities that support and strengthen the Indigenous arts community.
The Equinox program provides flexible, short-term support to individual Indigenous artists or collectives applying on behalf of small or large groups, arts groups, organizations, community groups, independent arts administrators, and artistic and cultural mediators. Grant funds may be used for organizational development and professional development that will have a positive impact on building the arts ecosystem in Indigenous communities.

The Artist in Residence Program is intended for individual artists to participate in residencies and New Brunswick public or private institutions and organizations to host professional artists, and enable them to pursue specific projects relating to their creative work. The artists in residence are also to contribute to the promotion and understanding of the arts by means of the artists’ contact with the clientele of the establishments. This program is divided into two components:
- Artist in residence – Artists: to participate in residency opportunities in New Brunswick or abroad, or for residency opportunities in Quebec as per an agreement with the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and;

This program is designed to enhance stability within established arts organizations that develop and sustain Nova Scotia’s arts community. Support is provided to organizations that produce or present artistic performances and events involving professional artists. Such organizations are fundamental to the vitality and long-term health of the arts and cultural life in Nova Scotia.
Support is provided towards ongoing core creation, production, presentation and administrative costs. Support is provided on an annual and multiyear basis and is subject to annual provincial budget availability.

This program helps emerging and established professional artists from designated communities who have historically faced barriers to accessing funding support. Designed to support artistic growth, development, production and dissemination, the initiative is available to the following designated communities of artists:

Single Or Extended Play (EP) Sound Recording
Purpose: This stream assists with the production of a collection of songs that are intended for release as an extended play (EP) recording package and/or as individually released singles.
Requirements:
- Successful applicants must produce a minimum of one to six professionally recorded songs
- The total recording length should be under 40 minutes running time. A longer total running time due to genre standards needs to be addressed within the application.
- The songs are intended for commercial release.
Full Length (LP) Sound Recording
Purpose: This stream assists with the production of a Full-Length Sound Recording.
Requirements:
- The project must result in at least six songs of recorded material.
- The recording must be more than 30 minutes of total running time.
- The recording is intended for commercial release.

- Applicants are eligible for a maximum of 50% of eligible expenses up to $10,000 per project.
Full Length (LP) Sound Recording
- Applicants are eligible for a maximum of 50% of eligible expenses up to $15,000 per project.
You’ve played some local gigs and built a local fan base. Now you’re ready to take your show on the road and perform for new audiences.
Around the province, across the country or overseas, the Tour Support Grant is aimed at helping the following performers generate revenue and build careers.
Applicants may apply for a maximum of $15,000 or 50% of the total eligible cash budget, whichever is the lesser.
Applicants are eligible for a maximum of two Tour Support Grants per year.
This grant helps cover the cost of marketing your product or business. Creative Saskatchewan offers two streams of funding depending of the scale of the project – Major and Micro.
Some examples of projects that could be supported include:

Artists in Communities – Projects (Deadlines March 5, 2023 and November 5, 2023) allows eligible applicants to engage in the arts through performances, exhibitions, or workshops led by a professional artist(s) or arts professional and presented either as a series or as a single event, and/or to work with an artist in the research and development of an artistic residency.
Artists in Communities – Residencies (Deadline March 5, 2024) supports community organizations to host a six- to twelve-month artist-in-residence project with a professional artist, working in any art form, that involves significant community engagement components. Participating artists take up residence in a community contribute to its cultural life and the community’s continual engagement in the arts.
Indigenous Peoples Arts and Artists. Deadline April 15 and October 15.
The Indigenous Peoples Art and Artists program supports the development and continuation of Indigenous Peoples’ art forms in Saskatchewan. The program offers three grant streams:
Basic: supports simple projects that accomplish one or two things in any art form. This could be a great starting place for an artist who has not received SK Arts funding in the past.
Intermediate: supports more complex requests for moderate-sized artistic projects.
Major: supports professional Indigenous artists with a significant sustained practice, working independently, collaboratively, or as a collective, to accomplish a substantial project over an extended period.
The Micro-Grant Program provides support to professional artists and arts organizations to achieve outcomes that respond to emergent needs, create access for first-time and underserved applicants, contribute to professional practice and development, and advance the professional arts and artistic practices in Saskatchewan.
