Switzerland has a population of 7.9 million with the median age being 40.4 years, nearly perfectly divided between men and women. In contrast to other countries, Switzerland is first and foremost an importer of music. Home to a diverse range of cultures and music genres, music remains the younger generation’s leading choice of entertainment. Contemporary pop music is one of the driving forces behind artistic creativity in the country, and contributes much towards Switzerland’s cultural diversity, as well as building to its cultural content. As a result, there is a growing network of smaller independent producers, labels and distributors who play a major part in the emergence and the promotion of Swiss artists. In the world standings, Switzerland ranks at 16th place in recorded music sales, with physical sector still dominating, accounting for 61% of trade value. Switzerland’s recorded music revenue per capita stands at $16.3 US – higher than Canada and the US.
Through market visits and a subsequent incoming mission of key industry players and buyers to Canada in May 2014 – at Canadian Music Week – CAAMA will bring this market into focus for Canadians and explore the opportunities and entry strategies for successful export.
