Nielsen Releases Year-End Data for the US Market

With 2014 having come to a close, Nielsen Soundscan has released its year-end data for the US market. Covering album sales (digital and physical) as well as streaming, this data gives a good indicator of the health of the music industry in the largest global market. It covers the period of December 30, 2013 – December 28, 2014.

Here are the highlights:

  • American consumers purchased 257 million albums in 2014, and 106.5 million of these purchases were digital downloads. This is an 11.2% decline from the albums purchased in the US in 2013 (289.4 million).
  • When it comes to digital albums and tracks, both experienced a decline in 2014. 106.5 milliondigital albums were purchased in 2014, a decline of 9% from the 117.6 million purchased in 2013. For digital tracks, the decline was even steeper – a 12% decline from 1.26 billion in 2013 to 1.1 billion in 2014.
